The one that got away

Every night, we still continue with our practice for the hip hop competition. Now, I have encounter my greatest enemy: Low Blood Pressure. Yes, I’m quite stressed now and I’m sick, aside from that I have to juggle my responsibilities at home and at school. I’m flunking commercial cooking and I have to do best in my tourism class.
Well, looks like I’m not alone.
While we were practicing for our production number, I just noticed this girl who is my former classmate. I notice the hollow beneath her eyes, her pale skin and her lost of weight. She’s not like that before: Happy, blooming and healthy. She’s a smart girl who is ambitious, studious, responsible, quite sociable but I tell you, you gotta have her as your friend.
When we were classmates, we seldom talk to each other but until when we were seatmates we usually talk about some of our own lives. All I know is that during sophomore year, she’s in-love with somone, unfortunately, she has to do it discreetly because of her parents. She grew up with high expectations, having to ace the exams and join the student body, grace the stage as she walk with the prized crown above her head. But she’s still a normal girl: falling in-love and received teddy bears and roses from her boyfriend.
I still remember the time when she told me how she met her guy, whenever he drove her home, sing songs at the top of their lungs and then just dropped her by the end road so that she wouldn’t get caught. The times when they fought and make peace; When every gift he gave her were all inside his bedroom: Flowers were framed, teddy bears were all kept beside it. It was such a hidden romance but they both knew that time will come, he has to see her parents.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t there when she won the crown for our school. I wasn’t there when she had the best time of her life. The time when after the pageant, she finally introduced the guy (as a suitor) to her parents. Her parents even invited him to eat with them and after that day, I saw her inside the comfort room trying to put her make-up on.
Me: uyyy.. blooming ka ata…
Marsh: *smiles*
Me: Hulaan ko, tungkol ba yan sa uyab mo?
Marsh: oo…
Me: Official na?
Marsh: *nods her head*
Me: aiiiyyeeeeeeee……
I wasn’t there when she had her 18th rose dance with her boyfriend. Actually, I was really surprised when she frantically whispered to all of her guests that she only introduced her boy as a suitor to her parents. All I ever heard was she really did have the time of her life. Every single girl in this imperfect world wants to have her perfect debut especially having her boyfriend or crush as the last dance on her 18 roses list. What more if that guy is the one that she truly loves?
Not knowing that…. She’ll be losing him soon?
Months later, I received the news that the guy had Leukemia. Well, I was like really? Well that can be treated right? So I thought it was just a rumor, considering the fact that their relationship has just grown stronger. That rumor became true when I saw her pictures with the guy… and they are both wearing face masks.
I didn’t expect that his illness worsened when two months ago, a flood of wall posts “condolence” were on her wall and a long post from her sister saying that she didn’t know what to do to comfort her..
… And so was I
I didn’t have the courage, heck losing the one you love is really painful and I just remembered a line from a novel that “even two years wasn’t enough to forget the loss of someone you love”. So when me and my friend had a conversation about her, I said that her solution would be distracting herself: make herself busy.
Back to the present..
And that is what she did. We are both contestants for the hip hop competition, is just that she’s in the 3rd year group. I’m relieved that she’s still hanging out with our common friend Argill, he is her friend ever since the first year in our school. Whenever we see each other, I always say hi or smile to her. Now, she has braces and still focus on her college life, trying to move on, but I know that in another life, she’ll still be in-love with her guy and she wouldn’t dare to say that he’s the one who got away.
I always remember their love story whenever I hear this song. It brought me to tears.
