Blogger's note: If you're not a Bridgerton fan and have not read the Bridgerton series; this may contain spoilers. If not, feel free to read.
In the eight Bridgerton masterpieces that Julia Quinn wrote, this is probably my favorite. Not only it unveils the identity of Lady Whistledown which is a mystery in the first three books but also the lovely creation of characters most especially Colin Bridgerton. The rapid plot twists are legendary and not to mention that ever since the third book (or was it the second?), their love story is already written.
I've yearn to talk about this lovely story and thinking about how handsome is Mr. Colin Bridgerton. But before fangirling, I will tell a brief information about the Bridgertons for the benefit of those who didn't.
The Bridgerton Series are written by Julia Quinn. The series revolves around the eight Bridgerton siblings named alphabetically: Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth, each with it's distinct love story and a bit about sibling bantering. The first book: The Duke and I, started with Daphne's love story with Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings followed by the other Bridgerton siblings and ended with Gregory with Lucinda Abernathy's On the Way to the Wedding. This historical romance is unique in some way that Julia Quinn manages to insert some of her favorite characters from her past novels like Lady Danbury. Unlike most adult romance novels, JQ also emphasize the bond between Bridgertons that somehow enliven her plot and value the importance of family.
Romancing Mr. Bridgerton is the fourth of the series and as I've said concludes the identity of Lady Whistledown. Lady Whistledown is a writer of a scandalous column sheet in the series which you will read every starting of the chapter and mostly talked during the first few books.
Now back to fangirling.
The story started in the perspective of Penelope Featherington, a wallflower and a spinster in the London season of 1824. Penelope loved Mr. Colin for almost half of her lifetime; with no proposal of marriage to accept, she finally accepted the life of spinsterhood with Eloise Bridgerton.
Mr. Colin came back from Cyprus and was astonished to see Penelope in a different view, probably because she has a freedom to choose her own clothing. but readers like me will know that it is because they were mature enough and comfortable to make interesting conversations which made them realize how they yearn for each other's company.
The creation of Penelope Featherington's character is interesting. A shy, introverted woman capable of making a mark on her own. I also admire her love for Colin Bridgerton, I admit, I could feel the same way when she is ecstatic when he called upon her. A long time crush or long time love visiting you would make your heart flutter eh? Colin Bridgerton's character is another thing, he seems to be a man who knows everything with a devil-may-care personality. I admit, I fell in-love with his character, funny fellow he is, but you can't help it but admire his wit as he lightens the mood in the past novels.
Their love story unfolds in a different way, with Colin discovering feelings for Penelope. Yes he cared for her but not in a romantic sort of way until he turned the age of thirty three which was a shame. But I think the story has a perfect timing even though Penelope went desperate into asking Colin for her first kiss. The story has different conflicts, but what stands out is the discovery of each other's secret: Penelope on Colin's travel diary and Colin on Penelope's identity as Lady Whistledown. The story then follows them falling in-love and how the two of them surpassed their worst fears with the help from the Bridgerton family (of course).
